Winter Light

December 21 will be the longest night of the year. The sun rises low in the south east and sets low in the south west. The buildings and streets of old Shimabara were planned with this in mind. The curvature of Kinse's roof, the height of the building, and the width of the street and front garden ensure that light reaches the whole facade of the houses across the street.

The map above shows the old plan of Hanayacho in Shimabara. The street diagram shows the light angle.

From the Great Gate to Sumiya, Hanayacho was once twice as wide as it is now. The southern half of the street was mostly gardens and cherry trees. The northern half (today's existing street) was open road. All along the gardens there were free standing lanterns. This garden and lantern pattern on the southern side of Hanayacho can now only be seen in Kinse's design and the design of an old ochaya near the Great Gate. Several new buildings are built so high and so close to the street that the old houses on the north side of the street are cloaked in perpetual shadow. During this season, it must be cold to live in such a place.

The drawing is a copy of a photograph from Meiji 10 (1878). Please note the line of gardens, cherry trees, and lanterns along the south side of Hanayacho. Next time you see Kinse, look for the front garden and old lantern.

Winter Light

Places: Tayucho Square- Response by Sayaka

It's very interesting.
You know, I always go to Kinse at night, so I have never seen such views carefully. I just noticed there is a square near Kinse.
In our last lesson, you told me about the building or parking lot in front of Kinse that used to be fish shop or ochaya.

The other day, I watched a TV program where Hiroshi Madoca (he is a musician but now like a comedian..) explored around that area. He started to walk from Tanbaguchi station. Then he found some funny places. In one of them, a man made a gym for archery in his house. I was surprised by it a little. The house is nearby the Shimabara area, but I'm not sure.

There are interesting places that I don't know. I have to explore in Shimabara.

Tell me about your town more.

Living in Flight

Now, imagine having entered the great gate of the flower city. To work here, you had to leave behind your everyday life. You had to say goodbye to your family and your hometown. There is no going back. But of course, even in the flower city, there is suffering.

In the 20th century, millions of people left their hometowns to come to California. California represented a kind of promised land. The weather is always good, there is always fruit on the trees, and there is always beauty in the movies. Yet, whether they picked fruit or struggled in Hollywood, most people found a difficult life in California. The song by the Eagles, Hotel California, describes this journey.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night

There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted
She's got the Mercedes bends
She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain
'Please bring me my wine'
He said
'We haven't had that spirit here since 1969'
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
Bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said
'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device'
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember,
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
'Relax' said the nightman,
We are programmed to recieve.
You can check out any time you like,
But you can never leave!

Flying Away

Imagine standing, 100 years ago, in front of the great gate to the flower city. Beyond the great gate, the flowers are always in full bloom. This fantasy land is a place where people are always ready to perform beautifully, always ready to display their arts, always ready to make a normal day into a special occasion. For men and women alike, the gate must have represented a certain kind of world, a world floating above and beyond everyday life. Perhaps, that is why people entered the great gate, whether for pleasure, or for work.

In America, ordinary life was not so different from that in Japan. It was hard, and people often wanted to escape. There is an old folk song about American's desire to depart this world of suffering and fly away to a land of joy.

Some glad morning when this life is over
I'll fly away
To a home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away

I'll fly away, oh Glory
I'll fly away, (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and bye,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

When the shadows of this life have gone
I'll fly away
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

I'll fly away, Oh Glory,
I'll fly away, (In the morning)
When I die Hallelujah by and by,
I'll fly away, I'll fly away

Just a few more weary days and then,
I'll fly away
To a land where joy shall never end, (I'll fly away)

I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away (In the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

I'll Fly Awayと言う歌です。

Places: Tayucho Square

There is a large square right next to Kinse Ryokan. Let's enjoy it.

The skin colored walls of Makoto no Yu and Shoei make up the south and east walls of the square. The west wall is kinse's dark wood paneling and aged plaster. Two of Kinse's gardens also embrace the west wall. Enjoy the falling red leaves of the cherry tree and the orange persimmons- they are sweet! To the north is the old pub and old tea house. At the far north end of the square is Shimabara Onsen, home to the radium bath.

Most of the visitors to Tayucho square come in cars, park, and then visit Makoto no Yu. It seems, three fourths of the square is made up of the Makoto no Yu parking lot. The friendly guard at the parking lot gives away smiles and nods all day long. This lot was once a large public steam bath. It could still be a hot place!

Imagine, if there were a few trees between the parking lot and the street, perhaps more locals and tourists would stop and enjoy the sun here. The occasional elder likes to sit by the old tea shop, and people of all ages buy from the vending machine at the bicycle parking lot in front of Makoto no Yu. Eating at Hanaguruma would be even better if we could watch the seasons and the city life in the square below.

If you feel like it, tell me your thoughts. You can send me an email, or you can comment on the website.
